Please join us for the February Member Luncheon as John Lukancic, City of Joliet Director of Emergency & Disaster Management, presents on preparedness for the not if, but when disaster/emergency strikes. He will also introduce the new office he heads for the city and their efforts to recruit community members.

About the Speaker: John Lukancic, AEM®, IPEM
John Lukancic is the Emergency Management Director in the City of Joliet. Originally from Joliet, he worked as a Joliet Firefighter/Paramedic for over 20 years, retiring as a Captain in 2019. He is a certified Associate Emergency Manager (AEM) through the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) and an Illinois Professional Emergency Manager (IPEM) through the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA). He has completed the FEMA Basic Emergency Management Academy and is a National Weather Service (NWS) severe weather spotter instructor.
He has received four associate degrees in different disciplines: a BS in Fire Science Management from Southern Illinois University, a BA in Social Sciences from Governors State University, an MA in Organizational Leadership from Waldorf University, an Ed.S. in Community Care and Counseling from Liberty University and is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Health Sciences at Liberty University. He has served on the City of Joliet Board of Fire and Police Commissioners and is a board member of the Upper Room Crisis Hotline and Joliet Fire Department CARES Foundation.
His interest in emergency and disaster management began during high school, after the Plainfield, Crest Hill, and Joliet F5 tornado. This interest eventually led to a 22-year career in the Joliet Fire Department (JFD), where he served as a firefighter, paramedic, fire/arson investigator and team leader, rescue diver, hazardous materials technician, JFD safety officer, peer support group coordinator, and where he began his emergency management-focused education.
After his retirement, he worked as a member of the JFD Community Mental Health Program development team, which provides in-field crisis intervention through the JFD and cost-free definitive mental health care to Joliet residents.
His primary emergency management-related goals are to develop the City of Joliet Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), improve training and exercises for staff and responders, improve planning for disasters and planned events, and provide robust community education.
His overarching emergency management message is that of individual, family, neighborhood, and business preparedness and the need for self-reliance in the face of disasters.
